Walking Cane
Walking canes come in all sizes and shapes. They are great to use when you are unsteady on your feet and need help with your balance, but they have other uses as well. I like to use one when I walk through my neighborhood because they are great for scaring off a stray dog. Seems we get quite a few of them where I live. They are good for hiking, but then again they do make hiking canes as well. Hiking canes are adjustable and usually come with pointed tips and wrist straps. You can find both types on this page.
Men from the earlier years carried them as a sign of distinction. People who have vision problems also carry canes with white tips.
Walking canes come in many shapes and styles and are also made from wood such as willow, pine, tree branches or metals such as brass, aluminum or steel.
Canes have different types on heads or curved handles. I have seen crystal heads, carved heads and brass cane heads. You can get carved canes, folding canes and even canes with compartments. People who are collectors often make it a hobby of collecting different canes from different eras.
